UK Graduate Visa
The UK Graduate Visa is a highly sought-after post-study work route, offering international students the opportunity to remain in the United Kingdom after successfully completing an eligible degree. This visa allows graduates to stay for up to two years—or three years for those who have completed a doctoral qualification—providing valuable time to gain professional experience, explore career opportunities, and establish a foothold in the UK job market.
While the Graduate Visa does not directly lead to settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain), it serves as a strategic stepping stone. Graduates may later transition into long-term immigration routes such as the Skilled Worker, Global Talent, or Innovator Founder visa categories, all of which can ultimately lead to settlement in the UK.
The requirements for a Graduate Visa can vary depending on your individual circumstances. For tailored guidance, it is advisable to seek expert advice from a qualified immigration lawyer.

What is an Administrative Review?
Administrative review forms an important part of the UK immigration framework, allowing applicants to challenge certain decisions made by the Home Office. Where an applicant believes that a decision on their visa application is incorrect, they may be entitled to request an administrative review. However, such a request can only be made on the basis that the decision was affected by one or more caseworking errors, as defined within the Immigration Rules. Upon submission of an administrative review request, the Home Office will reconsider the decision. This reassessment is conducted by a different caseworker or team from the one responsible for the original decision. If an error is identified during this process, the Home Office will amend the decision accordingly.

What Is the UK Graduate Visa?
Also known as the “Graduate Route,” this visa is designed for international students who have completed their studies within the UK’s higher education system. It replaced the former Doctorate Extension Scheme and reflects the UK’s commitment to retaining global talent.
The Graduate Visa grants the flexibility to live and work in the UK without restrictions on the type or level of employment. Whether pursuing professional roles, entrepreneurial ventures, or gaining entry-level experience, graduates benefit from complete freedom in how they utilise this period.
It is important to note that this visa cannot be extended. However, it offers a valuable window during which applicants may switch into other immigration categories if they wish to remain in the UK long term.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the Graduate Visa, applicants must meet a clearly defined set of criteria:
- You must be physically present in the UK at the time of application
- You must hold a valid Student Visa (or Tier 4 visa) granted for the course you have completed
- You must have studied with a recognised higher education provider that holds a compliant sponsor licence
- You must have successfully completed an eligible course of study
- Your education provider must formally notify the Home Office of your successful completion
In terms of study duration:
- Courses lasting 12 months or less must have been completed entirely within the UK
- Courses exceeding 12 months require at least 12 months of study in the UK
Eligible qualifications include:
- Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees
- PhDs and other doctoral qualifications
- Professional legal training courses (such as LPC, Bar courses, and equivalents)
- Postgraduate Certificates and Diplomas in Education (PGCE/PGDE)
- Foundation programmes in medicine or dentistry
When to Apply
Timing is a critical aspect of a successful application. You must apply for the Graduate Visa before your current Student Visa expires. Applications submitted after expiry will not be accepted.
Importantly, you do not need to wait until your graduation ceremony. You may apply as soon as your education provider confirms to the Home Office that you have successfully completed your course.
Most applications are processed within approximately eight weeks. During this period, you are permitted to remain in the UK, even if your Student Visa expires while your Graduate Visa application is under consideration.
Application Process
The application process is fully digital and designed to be accessible, though careful preparation remains essential.
Key steps include:
- Creating an online account via the Home Office portal
- Completing the application form accurately and in full
- Verifying your identity using the UK Immigration ID Check app or by attending a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS) appointment
- Uploading all required supporting documentation
- Paying the visa application fee and Immigration Health Surcharge
A well-prepared application, supported by accurate documentation, significantly improves the likelihood of a smooth and timely decision.
Required Documents
Applicants are required to submit a range of documents to confirm their identity, immigration status, and academic eligibility. These typically include:
- A valid passport or travel document
- Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) or eVisa details, where applicable
- Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) reference number from your Student Visa
- A letter from a financial sponsor, if your studies were funded within the last 12 months
Ensuring that all documentation is complete and accurate is essential to avoid delays or refusals.
What You Can and Cannot Do
The Graduate Visa offers considerable flexibility. During your stay, you may:
- Work in almost any role, at any skill level
- Be self-employed or start a business
- Seek employment or gain work experience
- Travel freely in and out of the UK
- Continue living with eligible dependants already in the UK
However, certain restrictions apply. You cannot:
- Access most public funds or benefits
- Work as a professional sportsperson
- Extend this visa beyond its initial duration
- Study on a course that would normally require a Student Visa
Dependants
Dependants already in the UK under your Student Visa may continue to stay with you under the Graduate Route.
However, new dependants cannot join you from overseas while you hold this visa. If you later switch into another visa category, such as the Skilled Worker route, your family members may then be eligible to join you.
Switching to Another Visa
Although the Graduate Visa is not extendable, it provides a valuable opportunity to transition into other immigration routes.
One of the most common pathways is the Skilled Worker Visa, which requires a job offer from a licensed UK sponsor and meeting specific salary thresholds. This route allows you to remain in the UK for up to five years and can lead to settlement.
Other potential options include:
- The Health and Care Worker Visa for medical professionals
- Partner visas for those in qualifying relationships with British citizens or settled individuals
Graduate Visa Refusals
Despite its accessibility, applications can be refused. Common reasons include:
- Applying from outside the UK
- Holding an ineligible immigration status
- Failing to provide required documents
- Not responding to Home Office requests
If your application is refused, you may have the option to request an administrative review. This must usually be submitted within 14 days of receiving the decision.
Pathway to Settlement
While the Graduate Visa itself does not lead directly to settlement, it plays a crucial role in a longer-term immigration strategy. By transitioning into routes such as Skilled Worker, Global Talent, or Innovator Founder, graduates can work towards Indefinite Leave to Remain and long-term residence in the UK.
Employer Perspective: Hiring Graduate Visa Holders
For UK employers, the Graduate Visa presents a unique opportunity to access a highly skilled, internationally diverse talent pool.
Key advantages include:
- No sponsorship requirement during the Graduate Visa period
- Minimal administrative burden compared to other visa routes
- Flexibility to hire candidates across all roles and skill levels
This two- to three-year window allows employers to assess candidates in real working environments before committing to long-term sponsorship.
However, employers must continue to meet compliance obligations, including conducting right-to-work checks and maintaining accurate records. Staying informed of evolving immigration regulations is essential to ensure ongoing compliance.
