What is an Administrative Review?
Administrative review forms an important part of the UK immigration framework, allowing applicants to challenge certain decisions made by the Home Office. Where an applicant believes that a decision on their visa application is incorrect, they may be entitled to request an administrative review. However, such a request can only be made on the basis that the decision was affected by one or more caseworking errors, as defined within the Immigration Rules. Upon submission of an administrative review request, the Home Office will reconsider the decision. This reassessment is conducted by a different caseworker or team from the one responsible for the original decision. If an error is identified during this process, the Home Office will amend the decision accordingly.

What Is the UK Child Student Visa and Who Can Apply?
The Child Student Visa forms part of the UK’s modern points-based immigration system, designed to ensure that applicants meet clearly defined academic, financial, and safeguarding standards.
This visa is specifically intended for children aged between 4 and 17 who are not UK or Irish citizens and who wish to study at an independent fee-paying school in the UK. In this context, the school acts as the licensed student sponsor, responsible for overseeing the child’s education and welfare.
To qualify, the child must be accepted onto an approved course of study. These include:
- Programmes delivered in accordance with the UK National Curriculum
- Courses aligned with the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), excluding those designed solely as preparatory pathways to higher education
- Courses recognised as academically equivalent by official UK education authorities
- Programmes that meet established independent school inspection standards
Parental or legal guardian consent is a fundamental requirement for this visa route. In addition, applicants must demonstrate that adequate financial resources are in place to support the child throughout their studies.
Equally important are the child’s living arrangements. UK immigration rules place significant emphasis on safeguarding, requiring clear and credible evidence that suitable accommodation and care arrangements have been organised in advance.
Once a place has been secured, the school will issue a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). This official document includes a unique reference number and is essential for submitting a valid visa application.
Guidance for Parents of Child Students
For parents, the decision to send a child abroad for education is both significant and deeply personal. In certain circumstances, one parent may apply to accompany their child under the Parent of a Child Student Visa route.
To qualify, the following conditions must be met:
- The child must be between 4 and 11 years old at the time of application
- The child must be enrolled at an independent school in the UK
- Only one parent may accompany the child
- The parent must demonstrate sufficient financial means to support themselves
- The parent’s primary residence must remain outside the UK
- There must be a clear intention to leave the UK at the end of the visa period
It is important to note that the accompanying parent cannot be joined by the other parent or additional dependants under this route.
The duration of the parent’s stay is linked to either the child’s visa expiry date or the child’s 12th birthday—whichever occurs first. If the child continues their education in the UK beyond this age, alternative care arrangements must be established, either through the school or with a suitable guardian.
There are also strict limitations on the parent’s activities while in the UK. This visa does not permit employment, study, business activity, access to public funds, or switching into another visa category.
Eligibility Criteria for the Child Student Visa
The Child Student Visa is designed to welcome young international students into the UK’s exceptional educational landscape. To be eligible, applicants must:
- Be aged between 4 and 17
- Hold an unconditional offer from an independent fee-paying school
- Provide written consent from a parent or legal guardian
- Demonstrate sufficient funds to cover tuition fees and living expenses
The visa is open to applicants from across the world, including non-EEA nationals and Swiss citizens, provided all eligibility requirements are satisfied.
Required Documents
A successful application depends on submitting a comprehensive and carefully prepared set of documents that clearly evidences eligibility.
Typically required documents include:
- A valid passport or travel document
- Proof of the relationship between the child and parent or guardian (such as a birth or adoption certificate)
- Evidence of sufficient financial resources
- The Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from the school
Supporting documentation may also be required from trusted institutions such as banks, employers, government bodies, or educational organisations.
All documents not in English or Welsh must be accompanied by a certified translation, including confirmation of accuracy and the translator’s full contact details.
Application Process: Step-by-Step
Applying for a Child Student Visa is a structured process that requires careful preparation and attention to detail.
Applications must be submitted no earlier than three months before the course start date and within six months of receiving the CAS.
Key steps include:
- Completing the online application form in full
- Submitting all required supporting documentation
- Attending a visa application centre, where necessary, to provide biometric information (photograph and fingerprints)
- Submitting the child’s passport as part of the application process
- Providing evidence of school fee payment, or proof of sufficient funds to cover fees and living costs
- Paying the visa application fee and healthcare surcharge
- Providing a tuberculosis test certificate where required
A well-prepared application significantly enhances the likelihood of a smooth and successful outcome.
Processing Times
Applicants applying from outside the UK can typically expect a decision within approximately three weeks. Applications made from within the UK, such as extensions, may take around eight weeks to process.
Approved Schools and Courses
To qualify for a Child Student Visa, the child must have an unconditional offer from a licensed independent school listed on the UK’s official register of student sponsors.
The course of study must align with recognised educational frameworks, including:
- The UK National Curriculum
- The Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF Level 3 or below)
- Independent school inspection standards
Courses may also be accepted if they are formally recognised as equivalent by UK educational oversight bodies, ensuring consistent academic quality and standards across institutions.Bottom of Form
