Temporary Worker - Seasonal Worker Visa
The Seasonal Worker visa is a specialised immigration route that enables overseas nationals to come to the United Kingdom for a defined, short-term period to undertake seasonal employment. It is designed to support industries that experience predictable peaks in labour demand, particularly in agriculture and food production, where timing is critical and domestic labour alone cannot meet demand.
This visa offers a structured and lawful pathway for individuals to contribute to the UK workforce on a temporary basis, while gaining valuable international work experience.
The requirements for a Seasonal Worker Visa can vary depending on your individual circumstances. For tailored guidance, it is advisable to seek expert advice from a qualified immigration lawyer.

What is an Administrative Review?
Administrative review forms an important part of the UK immigration framework, allowing applicants to challenge certain decisions made by the Home Office. Where an applicant believes that a decision on their visa application is incorrect, they may be entitled to request an administrative review. However, such a request can only be made on the basis that the decision was affected by one or more caseworking errors, as defined within the Immigration Rules. Upon submission of an administrative review request, the Home Office will reconsider the decision. This reassessment is conducted by a different caseworker or team from the one responsible for the original decision. If an error is identified during this process, the Home Office will amend the decision accordingly.

Understanding the Seasonal Worker Visa
The Seasonal Worker visa permits foreign nationals to carry out temporary work in carefully designated sectors of the UK economy. At present, the route is focused on two primary areas:
- Horticulture, which includes the growing, harvesting, and processing of crops such as fruits, vegetables, and flowers
- Poultry production, which is limited to a specific seasonal window aligned with increased demand during the end-of-year period
Horticulture roles can be undertaken for a period of up to six months, reflecting the agricultural cycle. In contrast, poultry roles are strictly time-bound, running annually from 18 October to 31 December. Applicants seeking poultry roles must apply no later than 15 November each year. Those applying for horticulture work benefit from greater flexibility and may apply at any time. This route has replaced the former Temporary Worker – Seasonal Worker (T5) visa and operates under a more structured and regulated framework.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the Seasonal Worker visa, applicants must meet a number of clearly defined requirements set by UK Visas and Immigration.
You must:
- Be at least 18 years old at the time of application
- Have secured a role with an approved UK sponsor and hold a valid Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)
- Intend to work in an eligible role within the horticulture or poultry sectors
- Be able to support yourself financially during your stay, typically by holding at least £1,270 in savings, unless your sponsor confirms that they will cover your costs
- Have maintained the required funds for a continuous period of 28 days, ending within 31 days before submitting your application
- Pay the relevant visa application fee
These requirements are intended to ensure that workers arrive in the UK prepared, supported, and able to undertake their role effectively.
Length and Conditions of Stay
The duration of your stay will depend on the type of seasonal work you are undertaking.
- For horticulture roles, you may remain in the UK for up to six months
- For poultry roles, your stay is limited to the period between 18 October and 31 December within the same year
You may enter the UK up to 14 days before the start date of your employment, as stated on your Certificate of Sponsorship. This allows time to settle and prepare before your role begins.
What You Are Permitted to Do
The Seasonal Worker visa is designed for a specific purpose, and your activities in the UK must align with that purpose.
Under this visa, you are allowed to:
- Work in the role described on your Certificate of Sponsorship
- Undertake study alongside your employment, subject to certain conditions (some courses may require additional approval)
However, there are clear limitations. You are not permitted to:
- Take up permanent or long-term employment
- Work in any job outside the one specified on your CoS
- Take on a second job
- Access public funds
- Bring dependants, such as family members, to the UK
- Apply for settlement under this route
This ensures that the visa remains focused on short-term, seasonal labour needs.
Types of Eligible Work
The Seasonal Worker route applies to a wide range of roles within two key sectors.
Horticulture
This includes work related to the cultivation, maintenance, and harvesting of crops. Eligible roles may involve:
- Growing and harvesting vegetables, both in open fields and controlled environments such as glasshouses
- Producing soft fruits like strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries
- Managing orchard crops such as apples, cherries, and plums
- Cultivating vine crops, including grapes and hops
- Producing mushrooms, both standard and specialty varieties
- Growing flowers, bulbs, and ornamental plants
- Maintaining nurseries, including trees, shrubs, and seasonal plants
These roles are essential to maintaining the UK’s food supply chain and agricultural output.
Poultry Production
Work in this sector supports the increased demand for poultry products during the festive season. Roles may include:
- Processing and preparing poultry
- Handling, catching, and vaccinating birds
- Packing and preparing poultry products for distribution
- Supporting operations within food production facilities
All roles must fall within approved occupational categories under the scheme.
Application Process
Applications for the Seasonal Worker visa must be made online through the official UK government platform.
As part of the process, you will be required to:
- Complete an online application form with your personal and employment details
- Upload all required supporting documents
- Pay the visa application fee
You will also need to confirm your identity. This can be done either by:
- Attending a visa application centre to provide biometric information (fingerprints and a photograph), or
- Using a digital identity verification process, depending on your nationality and passport
In some cases, your passport may be retained while your application is processed.
Supporting Documents
To support your application, you will need to provide:
- Your Certificate of Sponsorship reference number, issued by your sponsor
- A valid passport or travel document confirming your identity and nationality
- Evidence of your financial savings, unless your sponsor confirms financial support
Additional documents may be requested depending on your individual circumstances.
If any documents are not in English or Welsh, you must provide certified translations. Your passport must also contain at least one blank page for your visa.
Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)
The Certificate of Sponsorship is a central requirement of the Seasonal Worker visa.
Your sponsor must be:
- An A-rated sponsor listed on the Home Office register
- Approved by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA)
- Licensed by the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA)
The CoS must be issued no more than three months before your visa application is submitted.
It confirms the details of your role, your employment conditions, and your eligibility under the scheme.
Responsibilities of Employers
Employers participating in the Seasonal Worker scheme are subject to strict regulatory standards to ensure fair and lawful treatment of workers.
They must:
- Operate as approved scheme operators with the necessary licences and endorsements
- Provide a safe and compliant working environment in line with UK health and safety regulations
- Treat workers fairly, without imposing unreasonable conditions or penalties
- Issue clear employment contracts in both English and the worker’s native language
- Pay workers in accordance with National Minimum Wage laws, including fair rates for piece work and entitlement to holiday pay
- Ensure workers receive appropriate rest breaks and time off
These obligations are in place to protect workers and maintain the integrity of the scheme.Bottom of Form
