OVERVIEW
Eligibility Criteria for a Minister of Religion Visa
Your eligibility will depend on your experience, background, and personal circumstances. In general, you must meet the following requirements:
- Be aged 18 or over
- Hold a valid passport
- Have a confirmed job offer from a UK-based religious organisation licensed by the Home Office
- Hold a valid Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) issued by your employer
- Have at least £1,270 in personal savings, held for a minimum of 28 days prior to your application
- Meet the English language requirement at CEFR Level B2
- Provide details of your travel history over the past 5 years
- Demonstrate that you have the necessary skills and experience for the role
- Provide a tuberculosis (TB) test certificate, where required
English Language Requirement
If English is not your first language, you will need to demonstrate your ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
You can meet this requirement by:
- Passing an approved English language test at CEFR Level B2 across all components
- Providing an academic qualification taught in English, recognised by Ecctis as equivalent to a UK degree
You will not need to meet this requirement if you are a national of a majority English-speaking country, including countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, among others.
Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)
A valid Certificate of Sponsorship is essential for this visa. This is an electronic document issued by your UK employer and contains a unique reference number which must be included in your application.
Your sponsor must:
- Hold a valid sponsor licence
- Comply with UK immigration requirements, including right to work checks and record keeping
- Offer a clearly defined role with appropriate terms and conditions, including salary and benefits
You will not be eligible for a Certificate of Sponsorship if you already have the right to work in the UK through another route, such as indefinite leave to remain or settled status.In addition, you must meet all relevant job skill requirements, salary expectations, and suitability criteria, and have a clean immigration and criminal record.
Financial Requirement (Maintenance)
You must demonstrate that you can support yourself financially when you arrive in the UK.
This usually means showing that you have at least £1,270 in your bank account. These funds must have been maintained for a continuous period prior to your application.Alternatively, your sponsor may confirm that they will cover your living costs and accommodation for your first month in the UK.If you are applying with dependants, additional funds will be required:
- £285 for a partner
- £315 for one child
- £200 for each additional child
Salary Requirement
There is no fixed minimum salary threshold for the Minister of Religion Visa. However, your salary must:
- Be clearly stated in your Certificate of Sponsorship
- Be consistent with what is paid to settled workers in a comparable role
- Meet at least the UK National Minimum Wage requirements
How to Apply
To apply, you must first secure a job offer from a licensed religious organisation in the UK.Your sponsor will carry out the necessary checks and issue you with a Certificate of Sponsorship if you meet the requirements. You will then need to submit your application online via the official UK government website. As part of the process, you will:

- Provide supporting documents
- Prove your identity
- Attend a biometric appointment to provide fingerprints and a photograph
Required Documents
You will need to provide evidence to support your application. This may include:
- Your Certificate of Sponsorship reference number
- Evidence of your English language ability
- Proof of your financial resources
- A valid passport or travel document
- TB test results, where applicable
- Previous passports or travel records
- Certified translations of documents not in English or Welsh
The Home Office may request additional documents depending on your circumstances. You should ensure your application is complete and submitted in good time, and avoid making travel arrangements until a decision has been made.
Application Fees
The application fee depends on where you apply from:
- £719 per applicant if applying from outside the UK
- £827 per applicant if applying from within the UK (extension or switching)
Each dependant must also pay the same fee. In addition, you must pay the Immigration Health Surcharge, which is currently £1,035 per year.
Processing Times
You can apply up to 3 months before your intended start date.Applications made from outside the UK are usually decided within 3 weeks. Once approved, your Biometric Residence Permit is typically issued within 10 working days.
Extending Your Visa
You may be able to extend your stay if you continue to meet the visa requirements and remain in your sponsored role. You can usually stay for:
- Up to 3 years initially; and
- A further period extending your stay to a maximum of 6 years in total, depending on your circumstances
You must apply for an extension before your current visa expires.
Working Conditions
Under this visa, you are permitted to carry out religious duties in your sponsored role.Typical roles fall under occupation codes such as ministers of religion and related positions, including roles such as priest, imam, rabbi, or similar positions within a recognised religious organisation.
You may also:
- Take on a second role for up to 20 hours per week in the same profession
- Undertake voluntary work for up to 20 hours per week
- Study in the UK
You will not be permitted to access public funds.If you take on an additional role, a new Certificate of Sponsorship may be required.
Visa Refusal
If your application does not meet the required criteria, it may be refused. In the event of a refusal, you may be able to:
- Request an Administrative Review; or
- Lodge an appeal, depending on your circumstances
