What is the Senior or Specialist Worker Visa (Global Business Mobility) ?

The Senior or Specialist Worker visa is designed for overseas employees who are being transferred to a UK branch of their existing employer. It enables businesses to deploy senior personnel or individuals with specialist expertise to the UK on a temporary basis, where their skills are required to support operations, projects, or business growth.

This visa forms part of the UK’s Global Business Mobility framework and replaces the former Intra-Company Transfer (ICT) visa route. It is specifically intended for established employees of multinational organisations who are undertaking a defined role within the UK entity of their business. As a temporary work route, this visa does not lead directly to settlement in the UK. However, it can form part of a wider immigration strategy, as individuals may be able to switch into other visa categories that offer a pathway to indefinite leave to remain.

Senior or Specialist Worker Visa (Global Business Mobility)

OVERVIEW

Who Should Apply?

This visa is suitable for employees of overseas businesses who are required to work in the UK branch of their organisation. It is typically used for senior managers, executives, and highly skilled specialists whose expertise is essential to the UK operation.

European nationals who were resident in the UK before 31 December 2020 may have secured their status under the EU Settlement Scheme. As this route is now closed, individuals who do not hold valid status must apply under the current immigration system, including this visa where appropriate.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for a Senior or Specialist Worker visa, applicants must meet a number of strict requirements set by the Home Office.

You must:

  • Be employed by an organisation that holds a valid UK sponsor licence
  • Have a confirmed job offer within the UK branch of your employer
  • Be assigned a valid Certificate of Sponsorship detailing your role
  • Be undertaking a role that meets the required skill level
  • Receive a salary of at least £52,500 per year or the ‘going rate’ for your occupation, whichever is higher

You must also meet the overseas employment requirement. Unless you are classified as a high earner, you must have worked for your employer outside the UK for a minimum period:

  • At least 12 months if your salary is below £73,900
  • No minimum period if your salary is £73,900 or above

Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)

A Certificate of Sponsorship is a central requirement of the application. It is an electronic document issued by your employer that confirms the details of your role in the UK. The CoS will include key information such as your job title, salary, start date, and occupation code. It also contains a unique reference number, which must be included in your visa application.Your employer must hold an approved sponsor licence to issue a valid certificate. The CoS must be assigned no more than three months before your visa application is submitted.

Eligible Roles and Occupations

The role you are coming to the UK to perform must fall within an eligible occupation under the Global Business Mobility framework. These roles are typically skilled positions that require specialist knowledge or senior-level responsibility. While many roles from the previous ICT route remain eligible, certain creative and design-related occupations are excluded. It is therefore essential to confirm that your role meets the eligibility criteria before proceeding with your application.

Financial Requirement

In addition to meeting the salary threshold, applicants must demonstrate that they can support themselves financially upon arrival in the UK.In most cases, this requires holding at least £1,270 in personal savings for a continuous 28-day period before applying.

This requirement may be waived if:

  • Your employer confirms they will cover your maintenance costs during your first month in the UK, or
  • You have already been lawfully present in the UK for at least 12 months

Genuine Vacancy Requirement

The Home Office must be satisfied that the role you are being sponsored for is genuine. This means the position must be a legitimate role within your employer’s organisation and not created solely for the purpose of securing a visa. The role must be based within your sponsoring organisation and must not involve working primarily for a third-party business.

Salary Requirements

Applicants must meet both a general salary threshold and the specific ‘going rate’ for their occupation. This means that your salary must be:

  • At least £52,500 per year; and
  • In line with, or higher than, the standard rate for your job

Salary calculations are based on guaranteed basic pay and any fixed allowances for the duration of your UK assignment.

Supporting Documents

As part of your application, you will need to provide a comprehensive set of documents to demonstrate that you meet the visa requirements.

These may include:

  • A valid passport or travel document
  • Your Certificate of Sponsorship reference number
  • Evidence of your job role, salary, and employer details
  • Proof that you meet the financial requirement
  • Evidence of your employment history with your overseas employer
  • Tuberculosis test results, where applicable
  • A criminal record certificate, if required
  • An ATAS certificate for certain sensitive research roles

Providing clear and accurate documentation is essential to ensure a smooth application process.

Application Process

  • Preparing and submitting your online application
  • Uploading all required supporting documents
  • Paying the relevant application fees and Immigration Health Surcharge
  • Providing your biometric information, either at a visa application centre or via the ID Check app

  • Up to 3 years: £819 (outside the UK) or £943 (inside the UK)
  • More than 3 years: £1,618 (outside the UK) or £1,865 (inside the UK)

In addition, you will be required to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge for each year of your stay. Most applications are processed within:
